A pub that has kept its traditional charm!
Welcome to a real pubAs one of the few traditional pubs left in the city of Winchester, The Eclipse Inn is a rare diamond. Nestled behind the High Street, the pub is something of a hideaway, but nonetheless extremely popular with all age groups. The black and white frontage with handsome timbers, small-paned windows and original oak beams creates a delightful ambience in which to relax and enjoy a drink and something to eat. Steeped in heritage, this premises has existed in Winchester since around 1540, and today it retains that traditional charm, combining the feel of a popular local with a place of historical interest. This convivial mood is rare among city centre pubs, and what makes this one so unique. With no need for piped music or fruit machines, the unspoilt charm of The Eclipse is what sets it apart from the rest. Our foodWith outdoor seating just a stone’s throw from the cathedral
grounds, this small pub can be deceptively spacious when it needs to be,
serving delicious lunches. Menu favourites include homemade pies, such
as Steak and Ale and Chicken and Ham, all of which are filled
with plenty of meat - which is reassuring! Sunday roasts are just as
popular, with vegetables sourced from the Winchester Farmers’ Market,
and featuring huge, homemade Yorkshire puddings. |
Philosophy
We offer wholesome homemade food. For us, cooking is a labour of love. Your enjoyment of our food provides more job satisfaction than anything else. But, make no mistake, we are not a 'Gastro Pub' - we just want to provide honest traditional food.
Customer Reviews
Book a Sunday roast here ---the flavours, the portions and the flavours are typically British. We sat there in the intimate bar of the Eclipse and enjoyed a roast that took us back years ---succulent chicken, delicious gravy and huge roast potatoes. Mmm... Added to it were plenty of vegetables and (I like this touch) Yorkshire puddings. A piping hot meal and a hot plate!
Pleasant tiny pub
located just in the square next to the cathedral. Everything about this
pub is tiny - the lounge bar, the rear snug, the bar counter, the gents -
even the barmaid was tiny! Nonetheless, it's a pleasant place which
inevitably soon fills up.
